FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 1. What is rapid response grantmaking?
Rapid response grantmaking is the provision of immediate small grants to support interventions that are strategic and urgent which may not be part of planned program activities and is not covered by long term funding. 2. How much are our grants? UAF-Africa provides grants of upto five thousand US dollars. 3. What do we mean by unanticipated and time-urgent? The situation or opportunity is unanticipated and action must happen quickly to be effective. 4. What do we mean by strategic? The action is related to a pre-determined plan to create structural change that will advance women’s human rights. 5. What do we mean by supported? The group has the support of others involved in women’s human rights or related fields, locally or globally. 6. What do we mean by sustainable? The group is able to carry out the proposed action effectively, and can secure funding for future work related to the strategy. 7. What don’t we fund? UAF-Africa does not fund: • Humanitarian interventions • Individual participation at conferences • Program support 8. Who do we fund? UAF-Africa supports women’s groups within Africa who are responding to conflict by providing them with the necessary support to address the situation that has arisen and work towards the overall goal of advancing women’s human rights. 9. When do we receive and review grant applications? At UAF-Africa we receive grant applications throughout the year. We do not have specific grant cycles. 10. Can we fund individuals? UAF-Africa does not fund individuals. Though we make grants to women’s human rights defenders we do so through organizations working for the promotion of women’s rights. 11. Which parts of Africa do we cover? UAF-Africa supports women’s organizations in the entire African region. 12. How fast can we provide grants? UAF-Africa responds to all grant proposals within 72 hours with an acknowledgement, decline or request for further information. How soon it takes to process a successful grant depends on the time it takes to go through the due diligence process, obtain additional information and endorsements. 13. Can we give grants for activities/interventions around the rights of girls? Urgent action Fund – Africa supports the human rights of women and girls within Africa.
