MALAIKA FUND
The Malaika Fund is an endowment fund launched in 2006, as part of Urgent Action Fund-Africa’s efforts to ensure the long term sustainability of the organization. UAF-Africa has recognized that we need to find and support solutions for political stability, economic ability and social cohesion for women and men in Africa. We continue to mobilize local support for our work across the continent.
We are inviting you to publicly recognise and honour the women that have meant a lot in your lives! by buying space for a Coffee Table book specially dedicated to these women. The book will be launched towards the end of 2010. The space is going fast and you don’t want that woman in your life to miss out in this important publication. Take a look at the information sheet below and contact us for more details.

All over Africa, warfare is being waged on women (our mothers, daughters and sisters) – let’s heed their screams.
Every year thousands of African women die as a result of war, thousands face gross physical and sexual violations during conflict and in its aftermath. Of a sample of Rwandan women surveyed in 1999, 39 percent reported being raped during the 1994 genocide, and 72 percent said they knew someone who had been raped. In 2003, 74 percent of a random sample of 388 Liberian refugee women living in camps in Sierra Leone reported being sexually abused prior to being displaced from their homes in Liberia. Fifty-five percent of them experienced sexual violence during displacement. War has for decades cast a shadow and provided justification for the abuse of African women. The magnitude and extent of these violations is yet unknown as Human Rights Watch points out "cases of sexual abuse may be significantly underreported," because women fear "the possibility of reprisals by perpetrators... ostracism by families and communities, and cultural taboos." The end of internal conflict does not signal the end of violence for women, in fact in many instances the violence meted on them grows worse. When soldiers and militia stop attacking each other women continue to offer a soft target, a vent for the murderous aggression conjured up during the conflict. Lawlessness that prevails in both conflict and post-conflict situations means that these women have little political or legal redress for violations committed against them.
The Urgent Action Fund-Africa is determined to change this by providing rapid response funding for vital strategic initiatives carried out by women in situations of conflict and escalating violence in Africa. The Urgent Action Fund-Africa is committed to developing effective methods of funding and that will help save women's lives throughout the Africa. Over the last ten years the Urgent Action Fund-Africa has worked with women in over 35 African countries in situations of conflict or escalating violence. The Urgent Action Fund- Africa adds its voice in the rebellion of African women that are shouting ‘Not Our Bodies!’ At Urgent Action Fund-Africa we join the ranks of African women as they stand up for peaceful and secure Africa. This it is a complicated and challenging process but our vision is simple:
A secure and peaceful continent, in which women’s human rights are valued, promoted and respected.
